The Power of Nettle Tea: A Natural Remedy for Histamine Issues & Overall Wellness
Share
I spent my early 20s working in an office, where even on the hottest days, you could find me in long sleeves. At any moment, I could break out in hives for seemingly no reason. Just as quickly as they appeared, they’d vanish 30 minutes later. This wasn’t new—it had happened in childhood too—but something about early adulthood really set things off.
A visit to my doctor left me feeling frustrated. The only suggestion? Take antihistamines daily. No deeper exploration, no curiosity about the cause. That wasn’t good enough for me, so I started digging on my own. I stumbled across terms like "histamine-intolerance" and "mast cell activation syndrome," and I kept seeing nettle tea mentioned as a natural antihistamine. I had no experience with herbs—except for the Sleepytime tea of my childhood (you know the one, with the bear on the box)—but I headed to my local health food store and bought a bag of dried nettle.
I began drinking nettle tea regularly. There was no magical overnight change, but months later, I realized: no more hives. And now? It’s been a decade(!) hive-free—except for one day, freshly postpartum.
This discovery of nettle set off a chain reaction in our life. We started growing our own nettle, realized how much fresher and stronger it was than store-bought, and eventually, that passion turned into our herbal tea farm and business.
Why Nettle is a Powerhouse Herb
Nettle (Urtica dioica) is often misunderstood. Fresh, it stings—most people curse it and try to eradicate it from their gardens. But once dried, it transforms into one of the most nourishing herbs in the world.
A natural antihistamine, nettle helps regulate the body's histamine response, making it a favourite for those dealing with allergies, hives, and inflammatory conditions. It appears to stabilize mast cells, preventing excessive histamine release and calming overactive immune reactions.
Beyond its antihistamine properties, nettle is packed with vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C. It supports healthy skin, hair, and nails and strengthens the body during times of stress or depletion. As a gentle diuretic, it also helps flush excess fluids and supports kidney function.
Drinking nettle tea regularly is an easy way to nourish your body, calm inflammation, and support overall wellness—just as I experienced firsthand.
How I Prepare It
To get the maximum benefit from nettle, I prepare it as a nourishing infusion—a long steeping process that extracts all its vitamins and minerals.
- Measure the Nettle – Use 1 oz (about 1 cup) of dried nettle leaves for a strong, mineral-rich infusion. If you prefer a milder version, start with ½ oz (about ½ cup). Some people add a pinch of mint for flavour.
- Place in a Jar – Add the dried nettle to a quart-sized (1L) glass jar or heatproof container.
- Boil Water – Bring 4 cups (1 qt) of water to a boil.
- Pour & Cover – Pour the hot water over the nettle, ensuring the leaves are fully submerged. Cover with a lid to trap beneficial compounds.
- Steep for 4–12 Hours – Let it sit at room temperature for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight, for full extraction.
- Strain & Store – Strain out the nettle leaves, compost them, and store the infusion in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
- Enjoy – Drink warm or cold. We aim for 1–3 cups daily for optimal nourishment.
What Does It Taste Like?
It’s green and earthy and mellow—think spinach meets herbal tea. I strongly prefer to drink it cold. The flavour isn't exciting, but I found myself craving it over time.
Tip: As with any herb, we always take a break after several weeks of daily use. It’s a great way to check in with your body and notice the difference. And remember, not every herb suits every body … so always tune into your own personal experience.
